Kitchen Safety
Preparing a meal together with your kids has many learning and bonding benefits, but it also poses many dangers. With kids in the kitchen you have to take a few extra precautions but a wonderful meal, safely prepared is its own reward. Here are some tips:
Get off to a fresh start. Show your children how to properly wash their hands. Using warm water and soap rub hands together and clean both sides, between your fingers and around your nails for at least 15 seconds. Rinse and pat dry with a clean towel.
Safety first. Before you even start, ensure that you have quick access to a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher. Items such as a damp cloth (for spills), oven mitts and potholders should be immediately at hand.
Check the cook. Make sure kids’ clothes are properly secured. Sleeves that are too long or loose lead to accidents. Tie long hair back and remove any accessories that could get in the way.
Monkey see, monkey do. Your child is watching your every move. You may feel comfortable grabbing a knife by its blade but your child may try to mimic this behavior. Work slowly and carefully and keep sharp objects out of the way until needed.
Have fun. A little prevention goes a long way in ensuring a happy family moment. So take this opportunity to teach, learn and share with your little ones.
