4th of July
Brilliant days and balmy nights make for a perfect Fourth of July party. But before you fire up that grill, consider your lifestyle and the type of event that works best for you. Whether you’re planning an intimate gathering for a few close friends, a rollicking family affair or a no-holds-barred block party, remember to not go overboard, after all it’s your Independence Day too. So bust out the stars and stripes and get ready to celebrate the nation’s heritage with family, friends, fun and food with a Fourth of July feast to remember.
Set the mood. Select tablecloths, chairs, candles and accessories in red, white and blue. Add sparkle to your environment by decorating your yard, trees and bushes with colored twinkle lights. Dress tables with bold centerpieces of red, white and blue flowers, or use jellybeans for a light-hearted take on patriotism everyone can enjoy.
Make the most of what you have. Just because you’re short on time or resources is no reason to forgo celebrating. Make your event a potluck with everyone contributing food, beverages and accessories. Set up stations where guests can make their own burgers, dogs, pasta salad medleys and sundaes. Not only is this a fun way of budgeting your time, guests will appreciate the option of customizing their food and you’ll be free to enjoy yourself.
Festive foods and beverages. Artfully arrange beverages such as fruit punch, lemonade and blueberry iced tea for a patriotic display. Cut finger sandwiches into star shapes and garnish with star shaped fruit. Celebrate the melting pot that is the US with classic American fare with an ethnic twist like lamb burgers, chorizo dogs or chutney rubbed ribs. Experiment with various dishes and you’ll be amazed with the simple, yet flavorful combinations you come up with.
Let the night end with a bang. No, not the fireworks, the desserts! Try red, white and blue iced cupcakes or flag-themed sheet cake, or perfect-for-summer blueberry and strawberry parfaits with whipped cream. Novelties such as red, white and blue layered popsicles and jello are also fun for kids to make and add bursts of flavor to your menu.
Be safe. Fourth of July celebrations can be stressful times for animals that may be startled by fireworks or large crowds. For their safety as well as your guests’, make sure pets are secured or make alternate arrangements for their care. Surrounded by family and friends it’s easy to forget as the host you’re responsible for your guests. Check that a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher are within reach and that everyone is capable of getting home safely.
With a little creativity, you can make it the best Fourth of July ever. Have a blast!
